MMC Doctors Inspire Aspiring Doctors

Murfreesboro Medical Clinic welcomed about 30 middle school students from Rutherford County schools on Wednesday, July 19 to learn more about what it takes to become a medical professional today. Camp MD, a project of the Business Education Partnership Foundation, is a week-long camp that takes these students to medical practices around the county. The students involved are interested in the medical field and in the possibility of pursuing careers in healthcare, so several of MMC’s physicians were glad to give them encouragement.

Five physicians from multiple departments volunteered their time to meet with the students. Following brief self-introductions, the doctors were met with impressive, sometimes elaborate questions.

What is the best moment you’ve had as a doctor?

How important is it to you to lead by example for your patients?

The students were able to get the perspectives of the following physicians: Dr. Nicholas S. Coté and Dr. Zane Cooke of MMC Internal and Family Medicine; Dr. David Chatman of MMC Vascular Surgery & Vein Center; Dr. Joy Derwenskus of MMC Neurology; and Dr. Shannon Moran of MMC Pediatrics. Each physician told the students his or her story and what it is like in each respective field today. The students learned about everything from everyday administrative duties to rare, life-threatening surgical procedures. 

The students’ questions were met with full honesty. The speakers encouraged the students to create the right habits and make the right choices to fulfill their aspirations. No doubt, these students are the future of the medical field.
