MURFREESBORO, Tenn.--- Some Mid-State residents took a bold step and went bald Friday in an effort to fight childhood cancer.
The Murfreesboro Medical Clinic's 3rd annual "Bald in the 'Boro" event raised about $50,000 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which funds childhood cancer research grants.
Hundreds of people turned out for the event at Lanes, Trains and Automobiles, to get their heads shaved. Many took before and after pictures, and some even sported some St. Patrick's Day-themed mohawks.
"It's a small token that we can do to support a larger issue," said Marshall Campbell, the shaving coordinator at the event. "This is an issue that hits home."
Angie and Calvin Conner shaved their heads side by side, in support of 10-year-old Mark Kelly Olson. Mark Kelly is battling Leukemia, and undergoing regular chemotherapy treatments.
"It's an awesome way to raise money for a great cause," said Angie Conner. "We raised $640. Every little bit helps, and the awareness is sometimes more important than the money."
The show of support from the Conners and the rest of the community means a lot to Mark Kelly and his family.
"I'm so grateful," said Rosie Olson, Mark Kelly's mom. "I just don't want these families of these children to have to suffer anymore."
Over the last two years, Bald in the ‘Boro has raised over $104,000 to support St. Baldrick's.
The St. Baldrick's Foundation reports more children are lost to cancer in the U.S. than any other disease. Before they turn 20, about one in 300 boys and one in 333 girls will have cancer. Worldwide, a child is diagnosed every three minutes.
