MMC Foundation Presents Scholarship to Students of Breast Cancer Patients

The MMC Foundation and MMC Comprehensive Breast Center recently awarded the Crystal Scholarship to seven local graduating seniors: Joshua Best, Sophia Caballero, Anna Cary, Lucy George, Sarah Hallum, Harlo Staton, and Cole Posch. This scholarship, named after MMC Comprehensive Breast Center patient, Crystal Brown, was established to support the children of MMC patients who have battled breast cancer in continuing their education beyond high school. Her son, Michael Brown, became a recipient of the inaugural Crystal Scholarship in 2019. 

MMC’s Comprehensive Breast Center hosted a reception to honor those students and their families at Redstone Federal Credit Union on Thursday, May 25th. During the reception, Michael, shared a few words on behalf of his family, “This scholarship embodies my mother’s desire to give and help others. She believed that education empowers and transforms lives. By offering financial assistance and honoring their remarkable stories, MMC is giving these individuals the chance to pursue their dreams.” 

Dr. Shawn Horwitz, General Surgeon with MMC Comprehensive Breast Center said, “Breast Cancer not only effects the patient, but their entire family. This is a very small thing that we can do to help those families, inspire these students to continue their education and spread awareness.” 

In 2020, MMC physicians established the MMC Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization created to foster continuous improvement in our community’s health. In addition to the Crystal Scholarship, the MMC Foundation also awards the Drs. David & Yolando Chatman Scholarship to an individual pursuing a medical degree who is from a minority group traditionally underrepresented in medicine. The Foundation also funds the Hearts and Hands Program which supports 3 local charities chosen by MMC employees each year.
