SurgiCenter of Murfreesboro Medical Clinic Celebrates National ASC Month

August is National ASC (Ambulatory Surgery Center) Month!

Ambulatory surgery centers—known as ASCs—are modern health care facilities focused on providing same-day surgical care.

MMC is proud to offer the SurgiCenter of Murfreesboro Medical Clinic, accredited by the Joint Commission, as a resource for its patients needing outpatient surgical care. The SurgiCenter has transformed our patients’ experiences by providing them with a more convenient alternative to hospital-based outpatient procedures—while still providing quality service and compassionate care.

MMC SurgiCenter – Then and Now

Then:
The SurgiCenter opened in April of 1990, and was originally located at the former MMC building on Highland Avenue. The first surgical case was completed on Friday the 13th , but there was no bad luck that day! The facility started out with two operating rooms and one cystoscopy room. Initially, there were approximately twelve physicians who operated in the SurgiCenter stemming from four specialties – Urology, General Surgery, Gynecology and Ophthalmology. The SurgiCenter employed around 12-15 additional staff members. The SurgiCenter started out averaging between 2,600-2,700 surgical cases per year.

Now:
The SurgiCenter has since moved with MMC to the location on Garrison Drive. The facility contains four operating rooms and three endoscopy suites. There are over 25 physicians who regularly utilize the SurgiCenter from eight different specialties – Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology (ENT), Plastic Surgery, Podiatry and Vascular Surgery. The SurgiCenter employees over 70 staff members, including five full-time Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs). The SurgiCenter averages around 10,000 surgical cases per year.
