Move Over, Melanoma!
Everyone copes with fear differently. While some are constantly preoccupied calculating the threats and worries of life, others choose to drown out reality in denial. Neither option is healthy, wise, or one hundred percent effective. Melanoma is a word that definitely falls into the compartment of fear which can be overcome. Affecting more than 87,000 Americans each year, Melanoma is not a disease to be taken lightly. The American Cancer Society reports that ‘cancer of the skin is by far the most common of all cancers.’ Taking the steps available to protect and detect skin cancer before its progresses is a must, and the healthiest option in facing fear.
Being that Monday, May 1st, 2017, is Melanoma Monday, below are several tips provided by The American Academy of Dermatology to aid in prevention and detection efforts:
Know your ABC’s in looking for Melanoma:
A is for Asymmetry: Healthy moles are symmetrical
B is for Border: Ragged, notched, or blurred edges can indicate an unhealthy mole
C is for Color: If a mole varies in color from one area to another, it's time to check it out
D is for Diameter: Melanomas are usually greater than 6 mm
E is for Evolving: Look for a mole or skin lesion that changes in size, shape or color
Perform Self Exams.
Do so by following these steps:
Look at your body from head to toe as best as possible
Ask a partner to examine hard to see areas, or use a mirror
Check places such as the soles of your feet and behind your knees
