Mammograms

Murfreesboro Medical Clinic • May 09, 2020

A mammogram is an X-ray picture of the breast, used by our doctors at the Comprehensive Breast Center to look for early signs of breast cancer. Getting regular mammograms is one of the best ways to detect breast cancer before it can progress into more serious stages.

Why are mammograms important?

A mammogram is the only test shown to reduce breast cancer deaths. Mammograms can detect cancer early — when most treatable — long before it can be felt. This improves odds of survival and can help avoid more invasive treatment.

When should I get a mammogram?

It is recommended to start screening mammograms at age 40 and get one every year until your life expectancy is less than 5-10 years.

I can’t feel any lumps in my breast, so I can skip my mammogram this year, right?

NO! Please don’t skip your mammogram! This year has been extremely difficult, but please don’t neglect something as important as your screening mammogram.  Ideally, we want to detect breast cancer before it can be felt.  A screening mammogram is your best tool for early detection of breast cancer, when it is easiest to treat.
