MMC Wellness Program

September 19th, 2011

NexSlim Medical Weight Loss, located at Murfreesboro Medical Clinic (MMC), enjoys seeing patients achieve weight loss goals on a daily basis.  Whitney Meredith, Nutritional Counselor for NexSlim, wanted to find a way to help the employees of MMC reach goals and make life long changes as well.  In order to make this happen, she created a walking program, the mission of which was to encourage and support an active and healthy way of life.  What began as a small idea, quickly turned into a huge success filled with participation and excitement from the MMC employees, stated Whitney Meredith, another integral leader and participant in making the program a success.

There were a total of 238 employees on 19 different teams with one goal in mind, to reach 200 miles in 3 months.  Realizing that everyone may not reach the goal, shorter distances were set with prizes for each level achieved as a team and individually.  Employees showed their dedication by walking on their breaks, lunch time, inside, outside, and even in the rain.  A pedometer was given to employees to record their mileage, which was turned in to the team captain on a weekly basis.  By the end of the 3 months, 98 people reached the 200 mile goal, 136 reached the 150 mile goal and all together, the employees of MMC walked over 38,000 miles.

Anita Bush, an employee in our Radiology department, walked 200 miles in only five weeks.  I have had a weight problem all my life.  I can lose the weight, but keeping it off is another story all together.  About 10 years ago, I was able to lose 73 pounds and was doing well.  But, my oldest daughter was tragically killed in an automobile accident a little over 8 years ago.  Needless to say, I regained that weight and then some.  Last year, I was finally able to focus on myself and my health, so I began a weight loss program and lost 50 pounds.  I still have some issues with eating when I am feeling depressed, so keeping the weight off is a big struggle.  With me being a competitive person, the walking program helped keep me on track and to keep a positive focus.  I would like to thank Murfreesboro Medical Clinic and all the other walkers for their part of my success.  I am still walking and back on track with my weight loss program, which I only have a few pounds left until I reach my weight loss goal.

Jami Perkins, Rheumatology Office Coordinator, added, I thought it was a positive incentive program and a great way to get the employees of MMC involved in a healthy activity that also promoted fellowship.  I am very proud of the amount of miles accumulated, and I hope everyone continues to walk.

Dr. Nicholas Cote, Family Medicine Physician, stated, I was very excited to look out into the parking lot at lunch and see 20-30 employees walking.  It was amazing to see the comradery and enthusiasm of the staff regarding exercise.

The employees of MMC are looking forward to more programs like this in the future.  It is important to stay healthy in our lives, and Murfreesboro Medical Clinics employees continue to succeed at exercising and staying healthy.
